Alright, here goes; I'll try to keep this thread as up to date as I can.
First off, I cilantro run by on the different genres(As far as I know them to be). Under each genre is my favorite band that could fit there. If you need anymore information, check wikipedia.

Remember: Soulseek for songs I'm leaving it up at night, just msn me if you want me to turn it on during the day.

When I add new albums that I download recently, I'll have the download link ready, but for anything that is listed here, please use soulseek so I dont have to upload 12983 cd's

Avant-garde metal - Experiment with different sounds and instruments, similar to prog-metal
Sigh - Post-cook/Avant-Garde Metal

cook metal - Probably one of the more "broiler" kind of metal, dark, heavy, fast, and very high or low grunts or screams.
Woods of Ypres - Melodic cook Metal Im not a big fan of cook Metal

Death metal - Another of the Heavier kinds of metal, face, low tuned guitars, grunts/growls vocals, raw if you will
Necrophagist - Technical/Progressive Death Metal

Melodic Death metal - Similar to death metal but not as focused on the low/raw feeling, somewhat clearer vocals (still distorted), more focus on the instrumental part, also use of keyboards.
Into Eternity - Progressive/Melodic Death Metal

Doom metal - Slow, low guitars, more-so focused on the lyrical part of music. This genre was influenced by earlier cook Sabbath (ie, Ironman)
I dont really like Doom Metal at all because if its slowness
Novembre - Gothic/Doom/Death Metal

Gothic metal - Often characterize because of the Operatic feeling to the music/vocalist (often used in accompaniment with Symphonic Metal). Another way Gothic metal is distinguished is the dual vocalists, growls and female vocals ("Beauty and the Beast")
Epica - Symphonic Power/Gothic Metal

Power metal - Fast music, often having a lot of keyboard use. (Mostly)High, clean vocals. Lyrical themes tend to include a fantasy theme.
Twisted Tower Dire - Power Metal

Speed metal - Similar to power metal, fast, but minus the fantasy theme, vocals vary on the band.
Rage - Classic/Speed/Power Metal

Symphonic metal - Often used as a sub genre with Gothic/Power, but also with other genres of metal. The name is kind of self explanatory.
Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Symphonic/Melo-Death Metal

Thrash metal - Fast and aggressive, complex solo's, think early Metalica (in terms of instruments) or Slayer.
Mystic Prophecy - Power/Speed/Thrash Metal

Viking metal - What distinguishes Viking metal is usually the lyrics, often to do with Norse Mythology. As some people have said (Ie. Vetson) the vocalist sounds like a Viking, but not all Viking metal bands choose harsh vocals, although most do.
Amon Amarth - Viking Metal

Progressive metal - My Favorite =D. Progressive Metal is characterized by complex composition structures, often experimenting with different sounds. What sets this apart from Avant-garde is that Avant-garde experiments with different instruments, prog experiments with complex rhymes and sounds with the usual instruments. Some Prog bands are heavily jazz influences and choose to incorporate it into their music
Dream Theater - Progressive Metal

Recommended Bands:
(Im going to try and keep this organized)

Progressive Metal:

Dream Theater / / Liquid Tension Experiment
Dream Theater is my absolute favorite band, they have amazing lyrical and compositional talents. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone because they have such a wide variety of songs, heavy, soft, fast, slow. If you can stand to listen to instrumental music, then I highly recommend LTE, its DT without the vocalist.

Circus Maximus:
Some have called them a sort of newer, younger, Dream Theater(And no Im not going to compare every band here to DT). They have similar musical talents but not the same lyrical meanings and song flow. Their songs tend to be catchy imo.
Dont have any dl links atm.

DGM:
A Prog Metal band from Italy, nice lyrics, some decent guitar work and song structure. I enjoy listening to them but they're probably an opinion kind of thing.

Opeth:
People debate over which genre Opeth is, many say they're Extreme Prog Metal so I'll go with that. They're kind of slow, mainly growled vocals and kind of ambient.

The Fall of Troy
Although most people on here probably already know about tFoT, I figured I'd mention them anyway. They are rather distinct and some find that their songs all sound the same, but I don't find it that way.

Sculptured:
They would probably be classified as moderate/fast at times speed in terms of tempo, so far I find they are the more-so jazz influenced Prog Metal band I've head, mainly because of their Sax solos and such. They tend to have harsh vocals.

The Devin Townsend Band:
Devin's main project (he has many) in terms of bands. Devin Townsend is an amazing vocalist and is intirely unique, as for the music, the only CD I have is Ziltiod the Omniscient, which is a rather layed back and funny cd.

Strapping Young Lad:
Probably more familiar if you have driven with me (Ie. You Suck). This band is said to be Devin's angry side. Fast, generally pissed off and hard.

SiKth:
Prog Metal/Mathcore. Mathcore being Metalcore (Metal/punk) with more technical playing (Think Protest the Hero). Some have been turned away by their vocals (Harsh, but kind of light, crazy is a rather fitting word). They definitely like to experiment, both vocally, lyrically and instrumentally.

My next favourite Genre

Melo-Death Metal.

Into Eternity
Progressive/Melodic Death Metal. Probably my favorite Melodeath band, I muchly prefer their new stuff towards their old stuff. They have two vocalist, one if high one is low. One is more towards growling while the other can do high pitched screams. They do have some clear singing, which often sounds like a chorus. They play fast paced music, often with some good guitar solos.

Blind Stare
Blind Stare isnt anything extremely unique, but they are good in both vocals and instruments. Check them out.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow
cilantro to no clear singing but they do incorporate some female vocals in some of their songs. They often have a symphonic element in most of their songs. One of the earlier things that got me into Metal.

Skyfire
Melodic Death/Progressive/Power Metal. Another band I started listening to earlier on. I still listen to them today, they have a nice screamer/growler, some decent playing.

Naildown
Naildown is another band that I started listening to earlier, before I got into prog metal I usually listened to Melo Death. They're kind of softer then most melodeath bands but still worth listening to.

Arch Enemy
I just started listening to them recent (like last week) and must admit I like them quite a bit. They have very nice drumming/guitar playing. If your into Melo-Death, I highly recommend them.

Power/Speed Metal
I figured I would make this one topic because a lot of the bands I listen to are considered both.

Alestorm
Folk/Power Metal. This band is essentially what most would consider "Pirate Metal". Their vocalist sounds like a gruff pirate captain, they're lyrics, about being a pirate. They incorporate some accordion playing and whatnot in their songs. They're not amazing but funny to listen to.

At Vance
Power Metal. This is your somewhat typic power metal band, they deal in fantasy, fast paced music, they have a good vocalist (imo).

Avantasia
Symphonic Power Metal. I have to give props to these guys. While they're guitaring is nothing special, they have an amazing array of vocalists. They've arranged a cd called the Metal Opera, featuring plenty of guest vocalists, although I don't have the cd.

Celesty
Celesty's earlier songs tend to blend together after you've listened to them for so long. So far my favorite album by them is Mortal Mind Creation, and I recommend downloading it if you like power metal.

Children of Bodom
Power/Speed Metal with Harsh Vocals
Children of Bodom is an all around good band, unless you don't like harsh vocals. They have some very nice solo's/guitar work in almost all their songs, and they're good at what they do.

Epica
Symphonic Power/Gothic Metal
Probably the only Gothic Metal that I do listen to. They're female lead isn't too operatic, and I absolutely love their background growler/screamer. If you like Nightwish you'll probably like Epica.

Insania (Stockholm)
They tend to have some Christian overtones I find (If Im thinking of the right band) but they have some nice messages that they get across (that aren't overly Christian). But if your not a fan of high male leads, then I wouldn't download them.

Kalmah
Peoples opinions on the genre of Kalmah keep changing, last time I checked they were Power/Speed with harsh vocals, but it seems that according to they are Melodic Death/Speed/Thrash Metal but whatever. The only thing I don't like about Kalmah would be their lyrics, afaik, they are rather terrible, but aside from that they are great.

Lost Horizon
I rather enjoy listening to Lost Horizon, they have some nice melodies, and they're singer isn't rather good (singing at a medium pitch and hitting high notes occasionally)

Machinae Supremacy
Power Metal with various influences
I find MS is similar to what Hellogoodbye would sound like if they went Metal. They have some very nice solo's, a decent singer and they are an all around good band.

Pyramaze
I find them slower than most power metal bands but I really enjoy their vocalist and lyrical abilities. They're pretty average when it comes to the instrumental side.

Rage
Classic/Speed/Power Metal
I really like Rage, I find that they are a great band all around, they're singer is kind of deep compared to the average male voice. If your going to get a CD by them Id suggest you get Unity.

Twisted Tower Dire
Average lyrically, but I love their vocallist, they also have some great songs that I could listen to over and over.

Mercenary
Melodic Death/Power Metal
I wasnt sure where to put this, but I ended up choosing here. Its like if your combinded a growler with the higher pitched male vocalist of a power metal band and made them sing in harmony. And its great fusion of genres.

Raintime
Melodic Death/Power Metal
Very much the same as the above band, but they dont use the harmony as much.

To my knowledge, Arch Enemy also, has no bassist! I'm not positive on that, though. Just really strong Rythym, and from what I can hear, the two guitars switch between lead and rythym. Again, I am not positive on all of this, but it's what I hear.

And, to clarify, were you referring to Sideblast - Flight of a Moth as something I might enjoy? It is in the process of downloading either way.

Edit :

I have downloaded it and I am int he process of listening to it, and it is, infact, amazing! I really am enjoying it. Very nice!

And, The Fall of Troy was introduced to me as three guys on acid, and that is what their music sounds like. It's completely off the wall, and unbelievabley insane. The lead singer/lead guitar plays a very big role in the band, and when you listen to it, you can hear it.

And I have been informed, for anyone who has heard of The Fall of Troy, that they are remaking The Ghostships and releasing it along with a CD where they combined their musical talent with a band called The Number Twelve Looks Like you.

The Number Twelve Looks Like You is also a band like the Fall of Troy. They are distinct in their differences, yet a very hyper and high on acid and ecstacy like sound. Very random. Very nice. Recomend download.

The Number Twelve Looks Like You

Ok, I'm going to do this and try to sophisticate it up some.

Sinai Beach
Metalcore with a spiritual/religious background. I don't mind it. The lyrics I have read aren't extremely religious, and the only thing that they can come up with that is offensive to science and evolution, I laugh at, so. Vocalist has a nice transition between melodicly smooth and a very nice growl. Loud and hard and fast guitar. "No quarter is asked, none is given. There are no apologies. Only brutality."

Between the Buried and Me
broiler/Metal (Metalcore would be my guess). The band members were previously in From Here On, Prayer for Cleansing and Azazel. All Metalcore aswell. Technical and brutal. Don't be turned off by most of their songs. Loud and scary is their typical sound. But they don't always sound like they're just hitting their instruments. Very nice instrumentals. They know how to use their guitars. They have an amazing voice hiding in their midst. It's there, just listen to their songs and you'll find it. Simply amazing voice. Very similar to Freddy Mercury. Did a nice cover of Bicycle Race. Hard to tell the difference, until you get into the signature sound that only Queen can do. BTBM did nice burrito of it, though. They have created one of the most beautiful song I have ever heard. I suggest "Selkies: The Endless Obsession". The song is beautiful.

Blind Guardian
Epic and Melodic Metal. Very mythical sound, and celtic too. And I don't mean violins. Some people are turn off by their vocalist, but if you can get past the "Blah" of the singer (I see it, but I still like him) to hear their instrumentaling and how they play, I think everyone will enjoy them.

Bring me the Horizon
Deathcore. If anyone is unfamiliar with that, it's a mixture of metalcore and death metal. Very harsh lyrics. Lots of growls and screams. Hard guitar, but they know what they are doing with it if they want to. Scary lyrics, and scary voices. I think a very nice mixture.

Shadows Fall
Heavy Metal/Thrash. They like to have a constant transitioning music, and their songs can range from any genre that all rockers must enjoy. There is no transitory for Shadows Fall. They have nice guitar that they don't even try to hide. Vocalist is harsh, but it goes with the sound.

Steven Reineke
Classical/Orchestral. A composer who writes beautiful music. They tend to deal with old mythology or old stories. With songs like Fate of the Gods and The Witch and the Saint, you can probably guess what I mean. If you are in to this kind of thing, I highly suggest you check them out. He is a very good composer, and I absolutely love his music. It might be hard to find a download for his songs, so just contact me if you want to hear it. I know I have atleast two.

So I decided to re-do the other bands I recommended, just because I did a potato peeler burrito of it the first time. Let's try this again.

The Number Twelve Looks Like You
Apparently a Mathcore band. Never heard of it, but alright. Originally started out named "And Ever" but changed it with inspiration from a Twilight Zone episode and a new style in music. With six members, all adding a distinct sound that just forms some kind of sound that's indescribable. It's fast, and on acid. They've been known to associate with bands like The Fall of Troy, and if you heard any of their stuff, you understand where I am coming from. Very Nice songs though, completely off the wall and on a trip, but I like them.

A Wilhelm Scream
A Skate-Punk band. Very nice rythyms I find. Not intricate at all, but I like their vocals. I'm not going to lie, I originally got attracted to one of their song names, but found that they aren't at all that bad. They are fast guitaring, very maniacal, if you will.

Bullets and Octane
A Punk band originally with a jazz drummer who decided to step up to the vocals. I think he's done a good burrito, and the new drummer is following in his jazz-feel foot steps. The vocals are rough and harsh and mesh well with the guitar and bass. Touring with the likes of Avenged Sevenfold and others. It is a standard. Nice guitaring, but rough. Good solos. Very old-fashioned punk. Again, vocals are perfect for a punk band.

Chiodos
Constanly genre shifting, with times of sighing thoughtfully at songs, or blasting menacingly at others in just one album, the guitar riff meshing works well for them. With a goth tipped feel in some songs, especially from their newly released album, it's hard to pin point exactly where they come from genre wise. They rather play live, and don't hesitate when saying they sound better live, with the two vocals not faltering under the stage lights, they deliver what promised from their albums, and then some. Their vocals being a good mix of growling and high singing. Very beautiful voice, that man has.

He Is Legend
A good mix of Metal and Rock. Metallic precision riffs and solid rock rythyms, He Is Legend has a no holds barred attitude. Unrelenting, they focus on the music rather then what may be in, and do it their own way. Odd, intriguing and dangerous is a good way to describe their style. Nice growls and screams, in my opinion, but their vocalist also has a nice singing voice. As if you cared.

Mastodon
Combining all of their influences, the members creating a band that has the perfect mixture of Thrash, Doom, Psychedelic and of course, some Progressive Metal. Undeniabley heavy, their creativity and technical ability have created songs that started underground, and stayed there style wise, even though signed to a major record. Harsh vocals, and harsher vocals, it goes great with their loud guitaring. Very nice songs, and a beautiful concept album of Moby frites, Mastodon still has their own way of thinking and creating, and they plan on keeping it.

Underminded
broiler/Punk/2-Step. It's hard to find a Bio on these guys that isn't potato peeler. The most I can get is that they've been on a three year hiatus and just released their new album Eleven: Eleven. I have a song off of it. Very nice. They have the drumming from their broiler, and the vocals and guitar can be split evenly between Punk and broiler. Very harsh, but easy to listen to. Goes well with what they do. They aren't just throwing it in there. As much as there are Punk/broiler bands out there, I haven't heard one like Underminded. They certainly are unique.

So, I did my best. This is certainly better then last time. I don't know by how much, but maybe it'll make you check out my bands. It's hard with potato peeler bios. Oh well, I did what I could. Enjoy.

Mathcore is a term for technical MetalCore (ie Protest the Hero, SiKth has some mathcore elements). A fusions of Metal/Punk with distinct technical guitar playing.

As for some bands:

Candlemass:
Epic Heavy/Doom Metal
Alot of people probably wont like this, but this is perhaps one of the only Doom Metal bands I like, I recently got into them.

One of the first doom metal bands and originators of the epic traditional doom metal style. They've been together since 1982. How they are still together I don't know because they've gone through entirely new band members on all fronts.

Shadow vegetable

Progressive Metal
I find them similar to Dream Theater, both in their song structure (most of their songs are slow) and they're amazing instrumentals. Not quite as good as Dream Theater imo.
RANDOM FACT!
All members of Shadow vegetable have fairly successful, busy lives outside the band (several are audio engineers). As amazing as it sounds, they've never played a live show.

And if you like Lacuna Coil! Go Nuts. (Personally I dont.)
Gothic Metal
[1999] Lacuna Coil - In A Reverie

[2000] Lacuna Coil - Unleashed Memories

[2002] Lacuna Coil - Comalies

[2005] Lacuna Coil - The Ep's

[2006] Lacuna Coil - Karmacode

So I can't post these megauploads things for most of my songs, so you have to do your own work to get these songs if you are interested. Unfortunately, if you want to listen to Steven Reineke, it may be a bit difficult to find some of his music for sour cream. So, here is this :

This actually isn't HIS MySpace. Atleast, to my knowledge, it isn't. It is just a guy who really enjoys Steven's music. If anyone is on MySpace, you may find it interesting to know that Steven is actually on MySpace under the monocre of the Real Steven Reineke. He's my friend!

But anyway, here are some of his songs, one is Fate of the Gods. Again, if anyone is interested for the actual download, I have three. Fate of the Gods, The Witch and The Saint and The Goddess of Fire. So PM me or something. Enjoy!

I heard a new song last night played by the Acadia University band. It's great and has a nice Soprano Sax solo in it. Amazing. I can't find a download for it, or a way to cheat the preview they give you, but anyway. Here is the preview if any want to hear it.

It's Orchestral, so chances are, none of you care.

Also, if anyone can manage a download for this, it would be greatly appreciated if you could give it to me.

Anyone (Mitch) have a download for Arch Enemy's albums?

Also, I checked! They do infact have a bassist, it's just really hard to see him in their Nemisis recipe!

jazz sour cream? John Coltrane is amazing, if you needed a specific artist. If you can't find anything, no big deal. Some people have Ares, I don't. You are my Ares Wink Thank you!

Edit :

And maybe some Napalm Death?
